BLACK STONE CHERRY Guitarist Talks About Touring With BLACK LABEL SOCIETY
November 27, 2006Kevin Karr of The Times-Herald recently conducted an interview with BLACK STONE CHERRY guitarist Ben Wells. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:
The Times-Herald: How does it feel to team up with label mates BLACK LABEL SOCIETY for a U.S. tour?
Ben Wells: It's great to be on the road with someone you look up to and like as a musician. The tour so far is going great. The BLACK LABEL fans are taking to us really well. We appreciate all the support they give us. We are all big fans of Zakk and what he does with BLACK LABEL and with Ozzy. We grew up listening to this guy play guitar on some of our favorite albums and it just blew us away that we got the chance to be on tour with him. BLACK LABEL SOCIETY are a great bunch of guys.
The Times-Herald: Do you guys jam with Zakk at all backstage?
Ben Wells: Zakk is a really busy guy. He has a lot going on. We do get to hang out sometimes with him and talk. We have a really good relationship with everyone in the BLACK LABEL camp. Nice people to be around.
The Times-Herald: What bands inspired you to play?
Ben Wells: LED ZEPPELIN, classic rock, MUDDY WATERS, ELVIS, JOHNNY CASH, JERRY LEE LEWIS, rock, R&B, pop, classical. Actually we are influenced by so many different styles that I think it makes our sound more interesting. You get all those styles and sounds all mixed into one. We have very open minds when it comes to music. Everyone should have an open mind. There are a lot of good things out there.
The Times-Herald: Did things take off for you guys pretty quickly?
Ben Wells: Once we got people interested in the music it did. We worked really hard in the band. We come from a small town and there really wasn't much to do so we practiced music all the time. Roadrunner Records picked us up pretty quickly. It has been a blast ever since. We still work hard. Putting on shows and tours take a lot of energy. You have to keep what you got.
The Times-Herald: How is the relationship between you and your bandmates?
Ben Wells: The relationship is great. We have all been friends so long it is like a family. Sure you have arguments and what-not, but at the end of the day you are all still friends. We tour so much and we are all on the road so long together that you have to have a good relationship with everyone that is there or it won't work. I am glad it does work. We are all really happy and blessed with what we have.
